Loneliness contributes to alcohol and drug abuse. I’ve observed clients whose behaviors have been detrimental and even dangerous to their health due to polypharmacy treatments for depression. Sometimes debilitating depression is more than dangerous for their health. Their health can be compromised due to depression and medication abuse, which is sometimes accidental. Depression from loneliness can impair judgment. Medications should be regularly reviewed with a professional.
“Older adults may be more likely to experience mood disorders, lung and heart problems, or memory issues. Drugs can worsen these conditions, exacerbating the negative health consequences of substance use. Additionally, the effects of some medicines—like impaired judgment, coordination, or reaction time—can result in accidents, such as falls and motor vehicle crashes. These injuries can pose a greater risk to health than in younger adults and coincide with a longer recovery time.”

The rate of senior adult drug overdoses has quadrupled in the past two decades and shows signs of increase, particularly regarding painkillers and opioids. There is a movement to reduce medications to mitigate complications due to polypharmacy; however, this is a delicate process that a responsible physician must manage.
UCLA research finds that drug overdose fatalities among US older adults have quadrupled over 20 years. “Death certificates have dispelled any doubts about just how devastating the opioid epidemic is. Between May 2020 and April 2021, drug overdoses caused more than 100,000 deaths in the U.S., according to provisional data from the National Center for Health Statistics. And a new analysis suggests that many of these deaths are from a somewhat surprising group: older Americans.”

Medications should be reviewed because tolerance to medications can increase. Sometimes the entire medication must be changed for a different treatment. Neglecting to monitor medications regularly may have serious consequences.
One of the contributing factors of the pandemic is the instability of the caretaker market, which is experiencing a high rate of turnover. Caretakers may be chosen who need to be adequately vetted.
To complicate matters even more, is a dramatic rise in the use of Xylazine, an animal tranquilizer that is being laced into common street drugs. It creates open, flesh-eating necrosis wounds that result in amputation and even death. Its street name is "Tanq,' because it is a veterinary sedative. Opioids kill over 100,000 people a year. Currently, Xylazine is responsible for over 200 deaths per day.
The severity of these issues cannot be overstated. Loneliness and drug abuse can be avoided. I encourage my clients to regularly review their medications with their providers.
